You might call it a fortuitous meeting. Months after Hannah’s father first inquired with us about wedding photography, they still hadn’t made any decisions. There wedding was still a long way off, so Hannah and Stew were focusing on work for the time being. They lived in Phoenix and planning a Portland wedding at The Armory was a distant thing. And then suddenly, I was in Phoenix for a wedding photography conference and I met Hannah in the lobby of the hotel and showed her a few of our albums – coincidently they were on display in our album binder’s booth at the conference! We hit it off even though I’d been on the tradeshow floor all day and probably stumbled over my words quite a bit in tiredness. What are the odds, really? That I’d be in town the week Hannah decided it was time to make a decision on photography? Luck was on my side and soon together we planned out the timeline for their Gerding Theater at the Armory wedding photos.
First though, I met the ladies a few blocks away at The Nines where they got ready for the day.
From there we all made way to The Armory and Gerding Theater for their portraits before the ceremony. With a cocktail style reception, it was the best way to make use of their time.
This couple was such a joy to photograph! We did their entire portrait session walking around the block of The Armory and then right back into the theater for their wedding ceremony in the lobby.
A close family friend arranged most of their flowers – and she did such a wonderful job! I spent a good chunk of time enjoying walking around the many cocktail tables of the mezzanine to view them all.
Hannah and Stewart both went to Gonzaga and from the sounds of the cheers in the crowd, a large number of their guests did as well! Their college mentor married them in the Gerding Theater lobby wedding ceremony. It was at times emotional and teary but mostly hilarious, moving, and a truly lovely ceremony to witness.
May I just say, any wedding reception that includes a Cards Against Humanity game is a wedding reception I want to attend?
Easily my favorite first dance photo from this entire year of weddings:
If you’re planning a cocktail-style reception, this might be the perfect venue for you! Gerding Theater at the Armory is set up so well for an event like a wedding and I’d love to shoot there again. Hannah and Stewart, you chose very well– both in your venue and each other!
