Bryan and Justin are becoming very dear friends of ours, and it’s difficult to write about their wedding. We’re photographers and our medium is visual, not written. There was a time years and years ago I imagined myself becoming a writer, but at moments like these I truly just don’t know how to express myself in words. Their downtown Portland wedding photography is everything they are – warm, effusive, joyous, tearful. I could go on. I could pull out a thesaurus. But I don’t want to, because I feel like it should just be here ready to pour out and flow! This is going to end up being
one of two of those blog posts that the pictures will do a far better job explaining than my words ever can.
When we first met with them, they let us know they’d first have a civil service in Washington for the legal marriage and they asked if we could photograph that for them as well. We happily obliged, and then followed it up by photographing their welcome dinner on their building’s terrace in downtown Portland. Justin’s infectious emotions caught our eye just as much as Bryan’s sterner expressions as he tried not to cry during their official wedding ceremony.
We love this moment just after they exited the courthouse. A few of their friends flew in early enough to witness the civil ceremony and look on as they embrace. It’s moments like these that make me so glad we photographed this meaningful ceremony for them, even though it wasn’t they wedding that took months to plan.
The night before their wedding, Bryan and Justin arranged for a welcome cocktail party. A large chunk of their wedding guests flew in from out of town and they wanted a relaxed, casual environment in which everyone could meet and mingle. The terrace of their downtown Portland building served as the perfect location, and food in blue and green as well as Bryan and Justin themselves welcomed the wedding weekend in!
On to the wedding day over at The Jupiter Hotel in East Portland! Their Jupiter Hotel wedding was everything they – and we – hoped it would be. The guys were perfect grooms and rolled with the punches as a few things weren’t quite what they planned (near 100 degree heat in June was not on the docket!). I’m starting with a few of Joe’s images of Bryan getting ready in his girlfriend Shanna’s room. Champagne is classier in coffee mugs, right?
Meanwhile, I was over with Justin in the guys’ room. They were really hoping for the Marilyn room and they got it! I made use of Marilyn’s at first sexy and then slightly creepy face for many of Justin’s wedding prep photos. Kristin, his best woman, helped him put the final touches together. Just like at their engagement session, Bryan and Justin really pulled out all the stops and dressed incredibly well, right down to their shoes.
Spiderman caught a glance of their first look!
After shooting around the hotel a bit, we braved the heat and walked around Burnside for some wedding portraits. Joe found an awesome wall with colorful bubbles all over it, a perfect accent to the dapper suits. Also shown here, the invite the guys chose from Wedding Paper Divas.
At this point, we’d all had enough with the heat. Luckily, the Doug Fir Lounge was fully air conditioned. We bought a round of beer and enjoyed the cool A/C for a while before the ceremony, with the rest of their bridal party shortly joining us.
The guys admit they went a little crazy getting things custom printed. From the tote bags to napkins to shirts, they loved every bit of it. They wore their shirts to their Vancouver civil ceremony, and the staff at the Jupiter Hotel was kind enough to wear them as they worked the wedding as well. Joe managed to arrange this group photo of everyone that joined in their celebration while I was over at the lounge with the bridal party. Though it’s a pretty basic image photographically, it’s actually one of our favorites from the day. It shows that we’re not the only ones who fell in love with Justin and Bryan. They’re just so great, and everybody else wants to have a great time with them, too!
Oldtown Florist did such an awesome job on the decor for their Jupiter Hotel wedding! They really brought to life a dream green landscape mixed with succulents, bright lime accents, and terrariums with mini scenes. Their engagement photo curtain looked great as well, though we’re probably a bit biased about that!
And then Bryan danced into the ceremony where they married in the round. There were a few dry eyes left at the end, but not many. The ending photo says it all, as Bryan is still trying to hold it together without crying – something he noted often last night as they saw their photos for the first time.
We’ll have more portraits, more fun, and some crazy drag queen dancing as their Jupiter Hotel wedding photos continues in a couple days. We just want to spread the fun out a little!
